3-Day Figure Painting Workshop with Artist Seth Haverkamp / Energized Start, Graceful Finish

In this workshop, students will work from a live model to vigorously apply paint in simplified blocks to capture the gesture of the pose. Using a limited palette, students will paint with both thin and thick paint, in conjunction with wiping paint out, to achieve a successful drawing. Students will then work on pushing values to paint in the fall of light and add a three dimensional effect. Using a grey toned canvas with paint scumbled over it, with thick paint in the lighter areas, a fully realized figure can be achieved. Paint manipulation and brush handling will be discussed and demonstrated. Seth will discuss how this leads directly into a multiple layered studio figure painting. Seth will also discuss the similarity between painting from life and from photographs.

Local artist Seth Haverkamp Portrait Workshop

Portrait Painting from Life:An abstract approach to a detailed portrait.

In this workshop we will concentrate on representing a likeness through large shapes.  By using this step by step approach, the complexities of painting a portrait is simplified to the very basics.  By making large shapes progressively smaller, students will begin placing simplified versions of the features until they have a fully developed portrait.  The color palette will remain limited and students will see how to achieve many different "flesh" colors with very few colors on the palette.

FEE $285

Supplies NOT included. Materials list coming soon!

Studio Incamminati

Portrait Painting from Life: An abstract approach to a detailed portrait

Monday - Friday

January 20 — January 24, 2020

Time: 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.

Tuition: $599

By using this step by step approach, the complexities of portrait painting are simplified to the very basics. By making large shapes progressively smaller, students will begin placing simplified versions of the features until they have a fully developed portrait. The color palette will remain limited and students will see how to achieve many different "flesh" colors with very few colors on the palette.

The focus will be on :

• Drawing: Succesful drawing and proportions by pushing paint and through actively thinking of large shapes. Brush handling and paint control.

• Color: The complexities of color will be simplified. Seth will show how Form and three dimensions can be sculpted through a methodical color approach. By less color mixing and more layering of intense colors through scumbling, a unique look can be achieved.

Outline:

Students work from the live model. Each day will consist of Alla-prima portraits in the morning followed by longer poses that span multiple days in the afternoon. Most mornings will start with a demonstration introducing the concepts and focus presented for the day. Planes, edges, color temperature, color harmony, three dimensions, texture, paint handling and brush control will be discussed. In addition, cloth, backgrounds, and finishing paintings will be addressed and demonstrated.

The instructor discusses how this leads directly into a multiple layered studio portrait. He also discusses the similarities and challenges between painting from life and from photographs.

Seth Haverkamp derives his primary inspiration from beauty -- color, form, and the drama of light and dark. Along with interesting and unique still-life paintings Seth has done many commissioned portraits, but his chief subject and love is his wife and children. His portrait “Essie’s Headress”  won “People’s Choice Award” in the 2013 Portrait Society of America’s International Portrait Competition. Other honors include a Certificate of Excellence in the 2011 Portrait Society Competition, a Best in Show award at the 2008 Portrait Society Competition, and a finalist award in the Art Renewal Center’s 2011International Competition. Seth’s work has been highlighted in a number of publications including American Artist, International Artist magazine, and the online magazine Artists on Art. His work has been featured in numerous exhibitions across the United States.
